Students crushing over their teachers is an everyday affair that most of us have gone through in our lives. This kind of feeling for your teacher is usually one-sided and ends after a brief period. But numerous people have taken things to the next level and have got married to their teachers. Instead, it’s the teachers who have married their students.
An affair between a teacher and student is often seen as a taboo. But that hasn’t stopped these couples from getting married. They are the real examples of the fact that age is just a number. In most cases, the age difference is huge, but it seems like the more the age gap, the more they fall in love.
Teacher/student relationship has always been a hot topic for society. It is such a massive thing among us that we even have movies showing the same. For many of us, this unusual relationship may appear to be a taboo, but for others, it’s more of reality than fantasy.
Speaking of teacher/student relationships, today, we are going to read about the teachers who married their students.
Teachers Marrying Students
So here is the list of infamous teachers who have tied the knot with their students.
1. Newt Gingrich and Jacqueline May Battley
Newt Gingrich is a known face in American Politics who got married to his school teacher. Ginrich, back in high school, was a student in Ms. Battley’s geometry class. It would help if you assumed that the age gap between the two is far apart, but no, they were separated by only seven years.
It was in 1962 when they took the life-changing decision of tying the knot together. Together they had two daughters, the first was born in 1963 and is named Kathy and the second is born in 1966 named Jackie.
But things did not end well for this couple as Ginrich was found having an affair with Marianne Ginther in 1980. Despite that Battley did not opt for divorce. It was in 1984 when Battley was recovering from her cancer treatments that she was slapped with a divorce from Ginrich. However, Ginrich’s efforts failed as Battley wouldn’t give in for the divorce.
Newt Gingrich is currently a member of the American Republican party, while Jackie Battley passed away in 2013 due to several health issues.
2. Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau
When Vili Fualaau was just 12 years old, he crossed paths with Mary Kay Letourneau, who was a teacher in his sixth-grade class. Little did they know what life had in store for them? It was during the summer months when they started getting close to each other, which r eventually turned sexual.
Due to their 22 year age difference, Letourneau was charged with second-degree child rape. But while waiting for her sentence, she gave birth to his child. She was sentenced to serve six months in prison. She was later released on conditions that she will not see Faulaau again.
However, that was not enough two keep the two souls apart. Once she got out of prison, they rekindled their relationship. But fate again tore them apart as they got caught making out in the parking lot. She was sentenced to serve seven years of jail time. While in jail, she gave birth to their second child.
She was released in 2004 when Faulaau was a 21-year-old boy. He then took steps to remove her no-contact order and got married. They omitted themselves to raise their two daughters. In 2017, they faced a brief period of separation, but it was retracted soon.
3. Matthew Shane Wester and Amy Nicole Cox
Matthew Shane Wester, a 38-year-old varsity coach and math teacher from Alabama, fell in love with a 17-year-old girl named Amy Nicole Cox while he was still married to his wife.
But Wester seems to be a lucky guy as his wife divorced him. Soon after, in 2015, when Cox turned 18, they tied the knot. Their marriage, as expected, was not seen in a good light by others. Many believed that it was just a step to prevent her from testifying the trial.
But later, it was known that Alabama law doesn’t provide any such protection and that their marriage is a genuine one. The case was later dismissed, and they remain married to this day.
4. Peter Abélard and Héloïse d’Argenteuil
The next story we have is of Peter Abélard, who was a French academic philosopher. He was very much interested in Héloïse d’Argenteuil, who was his student.
This 17-year-old girl and her teacher were relays close to each other.
They shared a very passionate relationship. They started connecting in the year 1116. But back then, times were callous, and they soon faced a lot of violence and opposition from their families and others.
This affected both their careers. To complicate things, even more, she got pregnant. They were determined to have the child, and therefore, they decided getting married. They arranged for a private ceremony and tied the knot.
The couple tried their best to build a family together. Despite all the backlash they were receiving, they decided to stick to each other. To save their relationship from the fury of her uncle, she went to a covenant to become a nun.
To others, it appeared as if Abélard sent her away to remove her from his life. But little did he know that a violent plan was put against him. They planned to enter his home and castrate him. In fear of saving himself from the humiliation, he moved to the St-Denis monastery, where he became a monk. He did things as they planned while they were together.
The tale of this couple is quite popular in European culture. They are not alive today, but their love letters are still there and are exhibited in multiple collections. Seven letters show the amount of love they had for each other, even when faced with such difficult challenges. However, the letters also show d’Argenteuil’s disagreement for marriage.
These stories sound nothing less than a script of a movie. It is hard to believe, but all these stories are true, and some of the couples are even alive today. While some marriages ended for good, others are still going on strong forever.
Many of this former teacher and student marriages are still holding together to this date. Some of them even celebrated their 10th or 20th wedding anniversary already. They bought gifts for these occasions on websites like Party Wedding. You can have a look at it yourself as well!
To these people, love was everything, while everything else didn’t matter to them. They hardly cared what the world thought about them. The society may treat them as taboo, but they stand as excellent examples of true love.
